The purpose of the book is a basic history of South Africa. One minute you are a Rotterdam dockworker in 1652, drinking in a tavern Saturday night. The next thing you know, you’re in the middle of the ocean, bound for the Southern tip of Africa. It is history, but not scholarly and with humor. Sources are provided for those who want to dig deeper. I am an American who did visit. For fans of Michael Palin, his book Pole to Pole helped to inspire my trip there.
